A slab pie, in my opinion, is the best way to serve dessert to a crowd. Instead of baking your pie in a round tin, as is traditional, it’s baked in one big sheet pan.

October is the start of cooler weather and comfort foods but it’s also a great time to stock up on a few items for next summer and to stock your holiday baking supplies too. You can also find a few other deals on items you might be looking for.
Halloween
This month will be a good month for sales on not only candy but for all things related to Halloween. The deals should be plentiful on costumes, Halloween decorations, and of course Halloween candy. If you have candy you like to use in your holiday baking now would be the time to grab extra while it’s on sale.
Baking items
October starts the last three months of the year and the start of the holiday season. It’s time to start thinking about making your Thanksgiving meal and Christmas dinner along with all those delicious Christmas goodies too. You can stock up now on those baking items you’ll need and save. Most baking items have a fairly long shelf life and will keep without any problems until you are ready to start your holiday baking.
Cold/ Flu Medicine
Cold and flu season is sure to be starting soon. Be sure to stock up on the medication before you need it. This month there should be good sales and coupons to match those sales so you can be prepared for this winter’s cold and flu season.
Daylight Saving Time Changes
In October we fall back and it’s also the time we are reminded to check our smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors too. You should find good deals on batteries, smoke detectors, and other items related to this time change.
Jeans
October is a good month to find deals on jeans. The weather is getting cooler and with the back to school sales done, there’s lots of jeans leftover. Grab a few pairs of jeans while they are on sale. It would be a great time to grab a few pair of extra jeans for the kids for Christmas presents too.
Camping Gear
With summer being over and the main camping season done, this month will be a good time to stock up on the camping gear you want for next season. Look for deals on tents, sleeping bags, camp stoves, and other camping gear.
Summer Items
The last push to get rid of those summer items like air conditioners, patio furniture, gas grills, leftover summer clothing, and basically anything related to summer should be on sale at good prices.
Columbus Day Sales
This weekend can be a great time to shop department stores for good discounts on lots of items like clothing and home good. Also be on the lookout for nonfood Halloween items to be on sale.
New Cars
This year’s models of cars will need to be cleared out because the new year’s cars are coming in this month. If you are looking to buy a brand new car, the last three months of the year are a great time to find a good deal.
Seasonal Produce
This month should be a good month to find deals on almonds, apples, pears, broccoli, cauliflower, cranberries, melons, peaches, yams, potatoes, parsnips, pumpkins, and lemons.

You have a few options for putting together your saints coloring book. I’ll show you using the August Saints Coloring Book and this month’s printables as an example:
So, here are the options that I have for you on this coloring book:
1. Print this on two pages using duplex printing
If your printer allows for duplex printing (or you are cool with how to manually do this with your printer – it’s different on all of them, so I can’t really help there), you can print the first page of the book on one side of the paper and the second page of the book on the other side of the paper. Then, do the same with one piece of paper and the third and four page of the book.
Once I had my two double-sided pages ready, I just folded them in half and made them into a book. I used my long reach stapler to fasten them together in the middle. Easy peasy.
Or, you can always just fold them together and then use a regular stapler to staple the fold together. So many options.
2. Print the pages single-sided and cut them apart
If you don’t want to mess with double-sided copying or you just don’t want the coloring pages to be back-to-back, you can print out the four pages of the printable and cut them in half to get your eight page coloring book. Then, just assemble in the order of your choosing and staple them together.
3. Don’t make them in to a book at all
Follow the second suggestion up until that stapling part. This is good if you only want to give kids one half-page at a time.

12 October Activities for Catholic Families Printable
As I mentioned last month, I am starting to work through all of the the Monthly Activities for Catholic Families printables and update them. I am trying my best to make sure that they should be able to be used year after year by editing out dates that change from year to year.
I have a new fun format for the printables, which really speak to my natural desire to check things off lists. However, if you still love the old format, I’m keeping the older versions available for download still as well. They haven’t been updated in a few years, but they are all mostly accurate for dates.
{This is a listing of all of the activities on October’s download, plus a few helpful links that don’t appear on the printable, so be sure to read through the list for additional resources. The link for the download for both versions is after the activities.}
1. October is dedicated to The Holy Rosary. Make a full or single decade Rosary either as a family or each family member individually.

2. Start planning this month for an All Saints Day party or playgroup to celebrate All Saints Day on November 1st. (It’s also a Holy Day of Obligation.)
3. Spend a day doing little things for God and others in honor of the feast day of St. Thérèse “The Little Flower” (October 1st). {Here is a 31-page Saint Therese Printables and Worksheet Packet, if you would like to do more St. Therese activities.}
4. Work on activity and coloring pages about St. Francis. (October 4nd)
5. Enjoy angel food cake (or another angel themed treat) for feast of the Holy Guardian Angels. (October 2nd)
6. St. Ignatius of Antioch called himself the “wheat of Christ.” Plant some winter wheat with your children. (Oct 17th) Here is some information about planting wheat, which can be a great ground cover for your garden over the winter.
7. Spend the month doing read alouds from Gospel according to St. Luke (or pick a few stories for younger children). St. Luke’s feast day is Oct 18th.
8. Do something nice for animals to celebrate the feast day of St. Francis (Oct 4th), such as building a bird feeder, putting out bread with peanut butter and bird seeds, take a dog to the park, etc.
9. Check to see if any local parishes will be doing a Living Rosary during October.
10. Consider picking a religious themed Halloween costume this year, such as a favorite saint.

12. For the feast day of the Holy Guardian Angels (Oct 2nd), find your favorite angel craft to complete as a family. (You can also work on memorizing the guardian angel prayer together. Here is a link to different guardian angel prayers.)

What does a typical school day look like for you?
We ask this question, both as homeschooling newbies and veterans, because we want to know what works for others, and to find a rhythm to our days. But what makes that rhythm? What makes the day flow rather than stumble from one activity to the next?
Honestly, this eluded me for quite some time. I’ve made color coded schedules (who hasn’t?), checklists to do in no required order, time block routines, and every other attempt at creating order in our days.
And then I started reading Charlotte Mason’s Home Education book and there was a lightbulb moment.
Habits can be good or bad, but they are there. The habit of putting away your dishes when you’re done eating or doing your chores after breakfast can be habits. On the other hand, wasting time on the computer or procrastinating until a deadline looms is forming habits as well.
As a homeschooler, building habits can reduce the workload on everyone rather than needing to decide how the day is to be used hour by hour. Instead, following the road most travelled makes for an efficient day, and when the kids know what to expect, there are far less arguments than having to make your case for each chore or assignment.

After some time with working on forming a habit, it becomes less stressful and requires less effort. After a period of time, it can be downright enjoyable to get things done and out of the way.
Forming habits is easiest on very young kids, but even with older kids and adults, we can learn new habits with enough initial effort.
What habits to start withA clean home makes for a more peaceful environment to learn and work on projects, and creates a culture of mindfulness. Don’t get me wrong, our house is not company-ready at all times, but we still work every day to keep on top of our daily messes.
If the family isn’t used to cleaning up the dining room table after a meal, start with that. After that became habit for our young kids, we added on putting away all the clean dishes after each meal. Next, I have added cleaning up rooms that have accumulated too many toys or things that are out of place.

Do you have a habit of checking your phone when you’re stopped at a light? Or to check social media while watching a show, or even when you’re trying to get some work done on the computer?
It’s far too easy to get distracted in our fast paced world, and we’re learning the hard way how easy it is to fall into that trap. Cultivating the habit of attention in our kids from an early age is a tremendous gift to them, and should be the first habit we work on when we are focusing on habits within our school day.
If we can help our kids form the habit of attention, successive habits like completing a task before moving on or putting full effort into each task will be far easier since they are giving those tasks their undivided attention.
How we fail in habit formation“…when the child has really formed the habit of doing a certain thing, his mother imagines that the effort is as great to him as at first, that it is virtue in him to go on making this effort, and that he deserves, by way of reward, a little relaxation — she will let him break through the new habit a few times, and then go on again. But it is not going on; it is beginning again, and beginning in the face of obstacles. The ‘little relaxation’ she allowed her child meant the forming of another contrary habit, which must be overcome before the child gets back to where he was before.” – Charlotte Mason, Home Education
Another light bulb moment! I definitely have allowed my kids to break a habit as a “reward” for following the rule regularly for a long period of time, especially when it comes to chores. Then later on it’s easy to see how they can feel that they’ve worked so hard, they shouldn’t have to do the chores that have been expected of them since they were young.
Secondly, and something I think we have all been guilty of, is laying down all sorts of new habit for the kids to take in after a period of being more relaxed. Enter a new chore chart, and everyone is spending an hour cleaning every day for a week, and then it starts to fizzle out quite quickly because we are overburdened with these new expectations.
Slow and steady is the way to stay consistent.

During one year of our homeschooling, we spent time going through a book of Aesop’s Fables. While there was the occasional story that my kids didn’t like as much, I was surprised at how much they enjoyed these fables that always came equipped with a moral at the end. Because of this, I’m sharing an Aesop Fables Worksheet packet – Belling the Cat printables.
This Belling the Cat printables and worksheets activity packet is perfect for a variety of elementary students, although some pages (but not all) within the packet are perfect for preschool children as well.
Of course, the great thing is that this Belling the Cat printables packet is a free download. So, you can use as many or as few pages from the packet as you would like without feeling guilty about not using a whole packet that you paid for. Bonus!

A few years ago, I made this fall themed word search to take to a school fall party, and thought, “Why not also share it on Real Life at Home as long as I’m making it anyway?” It was a great activity at the fall party for a little bit of quiet after a busy fall craft activity.
Okay – that’s not entirely true. I thought about The Homeschool Classroom, because that was back in 2013, just before I decided to merge all of my sites together into a new site – Real Life at Home. But you know what I mean, right?

This puzzle can be a little tricky in that there is some overlap so you have to be careful to make sure that you’re circling the right word in these instances: fall / falling leaves / leaves (and) autumn / autumnal equinox. (The longest of both of those groups are either in the very first line or the very last line, just as a heads up.)
This fall themed word search also had the much longer phrase thrown in of autumnal equinox. I thought it was fun to put in there, and then gave me an opportunity to talk with even my older kids about the two equinoxes and two solstices of the year and what they meant. I thought it was a nice educational opportunity to include it in the puzzle.
However, if you have a child who is so young that they look at something like “autumnal equinox” and think they can’t find it, then you could always help them with that one or cross it out.
There are other words or phrases in the puzzle that might be ones that kids are unfamiliar with or that they may have heard, but not actually know what they mean. This can be a great opportunity to talk about words and phrases they might not know. Some examples might be: “What is a cornucopia?” or “When is the harvest moon?”

Great Catholic Printables for September:
It’s time for the second in my series of 12 saints coloring book printables! Last month, I shared the free August Saints Coloring Book. Now I have the Saints Coloring Book for September available.
The September Saints Coloring Book Printable has a cover that can be colored and then includes six coloring pages (they are half sheets of paper, so two fit on each standard 8.5×11 piece of paper) of saints who have feast days in September, with each page including a border that can be colored in and the saint’s name and feast day.

Note: If you don’t want to wait for each individual month to be posted from now until July, you can actually purchase all 12 saints coloring books at once.
You have a few options for putting together your saints coloring book. I’ll show you using the August Saints Coloring Book as an example:
So, here are the options that I have for you on this coloring book:
1. Print this on two pages using duplex printing
If your printer allows for duplex printing (or you are cool with how to manually do this with your printer – it’s different on all of them, so I can’t really help there), you can print the first page of the book on one side of the paper and the second page of the book on the other side of the paper. Then, do the same with one piece of paper and the third and four page of the book.
Once I had my two double-sided pages ready, I just folded them in half and made them into a book. I used my long reach stapler to fasten them together in the middle. Easy peasy.
Or, you can always just fold them together and then use a regular stapler to staple the fold together. So many options.
2. Print the pages single-sided and cut them apart
If you don’t want to mess with double-sided copying or you just don’t want the coloring pages to be back-to-back, you can print out the four pages of the printable and cut them in half to get your eight page coloring book. Then, just assemble in the order of your choosing and staple them together.
3. Don’t make them in to a book at all
Follow the second suggestion up until that stapling part. This is good if you only want to give kids one half-page at a time.

Saints Coloring Books Bundle Printable Set
Last month, I shared a free printable saints coloring book for August. Every month through next July, I’ll be sharing another new saints coloring book. You have a few options for putting together your saints coloring book. I don’t know about you, but I love having options.
So, here are the options that I have for you on this coloring book:
1. Print this on two pages using duplex printing

In short, however, this is a paid product and you should not be sharing it with anyone (unless you buy a large group use and someone falls within that use, like another teacher at your school with the large group use purchase only). You cannot upload this file online or make it available to anyone else whether for profit or for free.

I ran into a future homeschool mom at a curriculum fair this summer. She was a homeschool grad who is planning to homeschool her own children someday. She was looking for something to help her get a better grasp on geography, an area in which she felt she had a learning gap.
I really admired the fact that she didn’t look at this fact as a shortcoming of her own homeschool education – just an opportunity for life-long learning. It also made me determined to be more intentional about teaching my kids geography, though.
We already do incorporate a lot of geography since we’re using curriculum published by a company that loves geography. Still, there were lots of homeschool years before we discovered the curriculum we’re using now. So, we’ve added some extra geography to our school day while continuing to incorporate geography like we were before.
5 Fun and Easy Ways to Include Geography in Your Homeschool Daily geography drillsIn order to be more intentional about teaching (and learning) geography, I’ve added daily geography drills to our day. I got the concept from Trail Guide to World Geography and Trail Guide to U.S. Geography. We do things a bit differently than the books suggest, but the general idea is the same.
I set our timer for 5 minutes. That assures two things:
- Nobody grumbles because, hey, we’re only talking 5 minutes
- We don’t let the time get away from us since we already have a crazy busy day.
I put the globe in the middle of the table and I call on a kid (because otherwise Josh would sit back and let Megan do it all) and I call out something for them to find:
- The equator, lines of latitude and longitude, the poles, Earth’s axis
- The northern or southern hemisphere
- Oceans
- Continents
- Countries
I’ve kept it pretty simple, so far, by using just the globe. Once that gets easy, I’m thinking we’ll work on finding things in an atlas.
Maps aren’t just for geography-specific studies. They’re great for history and literature and even science and art. It’s easy to see their use in history, but they’re often great in literature, too. If you’re reading a book set in real places, it’s fun to look them up and get a sense of where all the action is taking place.
I guess the science part I’m thinking of is technically history, but it’s fun to find the home countries of famous scientists on a map. You can to the same with famous artists, but you can also learn more about the culture of a place through its art.
We always enjoy building models to help us understand concepts, including geography. We’ve made:
It sounds simple, but we have started making sure we keep a globe handy. If it’s in reach, we’re much more likely to grab it to quickly find something or some place that we’re reading about.
Back when we were doing our 50 State Fridays, we loved to learn quirky facts about the states we studied. Do you know which state boasts the bolo tie as its official state neck wear? Which state is home to the city that is artichoke capital of the world? Which state was home to Mike the Headless Chicken?
See? These are important facts to know – plus, fun facts tend to stick in your head better than the usual boring ones. 50 States Facts and Trivia is my favorite spot for learning quirky facts.
Finally, we love to make meals when we study states, regions, or countries. It wraps up your home ec, geography, history, and hands-on learning in one easy-to-store package. Yes, we love hands-on projects that we can eat! Not only that, but making meals helps you learn about the cultural history of the places you’re studying.
We enjoy cookbooks such as: Eat Your Way Through the USA and Eat Your Way Around the World, but there are lots of free, online resources, as well.
